On Saturday 16 November 2019, the Association, together with Air China's Japan branch, People's Daily Overseas Edition Japan Monthly and Japan New Overseas Chinese News, held the 2019 Air China Cup Chinese Speech Contest for Children of Chinese Residents in Japan at Yokohama Yamate Chinese School, a school with 120 years of history.
About the contest
Launched in 2017 at the initiative of Air China's Japan branch and run with Chinese community media, organisations and schools in Japan, the contest was now in its third year. Participation had grown from a few dozen to several hundred children, and for many of them taking part in, or winning a prize at, the Air China Cup has become a goal that motivates their Chinese studies.
The Association's role
- Took part from the planning stage and made a donation
- Helped recruit and nominate participants
- Served on the judging panel
A member's view
One member who had previously worked in Shenzhen said that, just as people say "once you come, you are a Shenzhener", she still felt like a Shenzhener after leaving for Japan. Her two primary-school daughters competed, one winning third prize and the other a Future Star award. She was delighted that her children keep learning their mother tongue abroad and carry Chinese culture forward, and hoped the Association would hold more such events for the children of Shenzhen people in Japan.
Looking ahead
The Association will continue to support activities that help the next generation of Chinese residents in Japan value their language and cultural roots and grow into bridges between Japan and China.
