Remarks

President Jiang Feng set out three hopes: that competitors would use the competition to refine their plans and, with Shenzhen's policy support, get their projects established quickly; that business leaders would help bring promising projects to market; and that institutions would further strengthen their support for innovation and start-ups.

Yutaka Iwasa of the Talent Liaison Office explained how the competition works and reviewed the Japan round's record, noting three award-winning teams from Japan in 2018, led by Liang Xiaoguang, Sang Jing and Cheng Liang. Sadahiro Sugita, Executive Director of the Japan-China Economic Association, spoke of Shenzhen's vitality and his wish to help attract talent. Judges Diao Xu (State Power Investment Corporation) and Zhang Linfeng (ZTE) highlighted the success of Japan-based projects and the importance of innovative talent for core technologies.

Dr Xu Yongwei, whose team received Shenzhen's Peacock Team funding in October 2017, described how the project took root in Shenzhen in just over a year and pledged to help others follow.
